BMW has announced that it will be investing nearly $900 million USD and adding 300 new jobs at its plant in South Carolina to support production of the upcoming BMW X4 at the Spartanburg facility. The new BMW X4 will be positioned between the current X3 and X5 within the automaker’s lineup, so essentially, the X4 will be to the X3 what the X6 is to the X5.

We already know that new BMW X4 will be a smaller version of the X6 and will be based on the same platform as the BMW X3. As far as the powerhouse is concerned, the new 2.0 litre turbocharged 4 cylinder engine and also BMW’s xDrive All wheel drive technology. This will give it somewhat off-road capabilities.

Earlier there were rumors going around on the web world that the X4 might be a two-door crossover SUV, but Munich based manufacturer has zeroed in on a four-door configuration. To explain this, a source commented, ‘Because marketing pegs bigger volumes on the four-door, and because production saves a chunk of money by retaining the lower inner and outer side panels as well as the lower door skins.’

Designed to battle the Porsche Cajun and Range Rover Evoque, the X4 will reportedly be launched in 2014 with a variety of four- and six-cylinder engines. Styling will be heavily influenced by the X6 and model is expected to measure approximately 4.65 meters (15.25 feet) long.
