Japanese two-wheeler major Yamaha Motors is seriously considering entering the scooter market with a new scoot that is currently in the development phase. The company is said to be testing a new product at its R&D facility in Japan. This new scooter is said to be developed specifically for the Indian market. The scooter market in India is rapidly growing and Yamaha wants a piece of the pie. Thus, Yamaha has been studying the Indian market very closely for the past two years and has also displayed a array of step-through and gearless scooters at various dealership across the country in order to gauge the response of the customers. It appears that this research has provided Yamaha with valuable information and the company has decided to bring in this new scoot.

Specifications and other details are not yet out, however, we speculate that the scoot is to have a 110-125cc motor and a contemporary design. This new scoot is expected to make an appearance at the 2012 Auto Expo and will go on sale possibly by the end of 2012. Along with the gearless scooter Yamaha is also planning to bring in an electric scoot in the Indian market to offer consumers an alternative fuelled mode of transport.

“For rising fuel prices, the electric bike is a good option. Currently we are selling electric bikes in Japan and Europe. There is a possibility of introducing these products in Indian market” said, Mr. Jun Nakata, India Yamaha Motor Director (Sales and Marketing). Another company official said the launch was expected by 2012. Yamaha would make the scooters at its existing facilities at Surajpur and Faridabad.
