Previous reports have speculated that it could be called ‘VW Bora’ or that a suffix would be added to the ‘Polo’ brand name. Now the trusted source reveals that the upcoming compact sedan is named ‘VW Ameo’. Codenamed as the VW ICS, this sub-4 metre compact sedan is expected to be displayed at the 2016 Auto Expo.

The Ameo will compete against the likes of the Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest, Hyundai Xcent and the Figo Aspire. These spyshots confirm that the new sub-4-metre sedan is essentially a Polo with truncated boot, however, we expect Ameo to be more spacious, offering more legroom and boot space than Polo.

To keep costs down, the upcoming Ameo will also share a lot of parts of Polo/Vento. It is likely that the Ameo uses a re-tuned version of the Polo’s 1.2-litre petrol 3-cyl and 1.5-litre diesel 4-cyl engine, paired either to a 5-speed manual or 7-speed DSG transmissions. Production is expected to commence at Volkswagen’s plant at Chakan, Pune in the first half of 2016.
