At the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event, Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur’s 1924 Rolls-Royce 20 HP Barker Tourer (GLK 21) won the Lucius Beebe trophy on 19th August 2012. It is the first Indian entry to win an award at the world renowned Pebble Beach in California, USA. Each year, rare and most exquisite automobiles from all around the world are invited every year for the 5-day annual event.

On this auspicious occasion, the Mewar House also rolled out a coffee table book (194 pages) that is devoted to the restoration and history of Rolls-Royce car of Udaipur and its family association since past seven generations. The car was reported to have been brought by the family and was used by them for a long time.

However, there came a time when it was going to be cannibalized for its spare parts and Shriji spotted the car. Having a passion for restoring classic cars, Shriji resurrected it to its former glory, a process which took seven to eight years and involved Rolls-Royce restoration expert Graham Ashley-Carter.

Coming to the Coffee table book that was launched on the event is very interesting. The book is called ‘The Royal Udaipur RR GLK 21 Classic Drive from Derby to Udaipur to Pebble Beach and… Continues’. The book makes you experience again the journey of Rolls-Royce 20 HP, Barker Tourer from the beginning.

At the event, Mewar said, “India was the ultimate destination for many of Rolls-Royce’s early cars because the Indian Maharanas and Maharajas were only too happy to make the transition from horse-drawn carriages to a car.”
