Back in 2013, Indian Army had invited quotations from various automobile manufacturers to replace all 30,000 Gypsy cars. But Tata Safari and Mahindra Scorpio were left to the final list being feasible through rigorous trials and field tests in the most adverse of weather conditions. Both models on-test were modified to meet defence requirements.

However, Tata Safari Storme has managed to gain the position of being a companion for the soldiers.

An initial order of around 3,200 Tata Safari SUVs has already been placed with Tata Motors, which could be increased to 30,000 over the coming years. This is the second largest deal bagged by Tata Motors from Indian Army this year, the first being the Rs 1,300 crore deal to supply high-mobility military trucks.
