PSA Peugeot Citroen (PSA) in alliance with General Motors (GM) has plans to enter India. The GM-Peugeot alliance was set up earlier this year and its confirmed that the two Automobile firms have signed agreements to develop vehicles and purchasing ventures. As per a PSA Peugeot Citroen official, they feel India could be one of the growth markets.
The agreement signed on 29th February, 2012 was for the first three vehicle projects, as per the new agreement, the venture operates about development of platform/architecture in various segments. The first agreement includes developing a C-segment Multi-purpose vehicle for GM’s Opel brand and a crossover for the Peugeot brand. The second one defines development of a B-segment MPV for both the groups. The third agreement confirms Co-development of an upgraded low CO2 B-segment platform to feed Opel and PSA’s next generation of cars in Europe and other regions.
The first vehicles resulting from these agreements are expected to be launched in 2016.PSA Peugeot Citroen’s EB engine which is available in 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre options will be suitable for markets like India.
Peugeot had made big announcements in the past, like a INR 4000 Crore investment at Sanand, Gujarat and two cars for India, the 508 sedan and the 208 hatchback. But these plans didn’t work out too well because of the economic crisis in Europe. Due to these past incidents, Peugeot is really careful and going slow on its Indian operations.
