Maruti Suzuki to showcase Ignis at 2016 Indian Auto Expo; launch in Mid-2016

It is a very well known fact that compact SUV’s are the trend and, the compact SUV segment is growing by the day. Well, the trend in the compact SUV Segment is leading to even more compact SUV’s. The pioneer in the segment, the Renault Duster is a good SUV, but a reasonably sized one and yet was called a compact SUV and then came along the Ford Ecosport which was smaller than the Duster in Size and now, the SUV’s are becoming even more compact.

Mahindra has been testing the S101 Compact SUV for a few months now and Maruti Suzuki too was in the running to introduce their own compact SUV based on the XA-Alpha concept displayed at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi. Well, before that compact SUV is launched, Maruti Suzuki will launch a smaller compact SUV named the Ignis.

Maruti Suzuki will be displaying the Ignis at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo to be held in the first week of February, 2016 in New Delhi. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is based on the Ignis concept revealed by parent Company Suzuki at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.

With a length of 3,700mm, height of 1,595mm and width of 1,660mm, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, according to Suzuki, will have “Versatility for daily life and leisure”. The Ignis is more like a hatchback with a wider stance and higher ground clearance. The ignis was first previewed as the Suzuki iM-4 concept at the Geneva Motor show, earlier this year.

The Suzuki Ignis was showcased with a 1.2-litre, DualJet petrol engine with SVHS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) technology, paired to a CVT Gearbox driving the front wheels. An AWD option may be added on later. But we do not think that the Ignis will be powered by this drivetrain in India.

In India, the Ignis might be powered by the 1.2 liter K-series petrol engine or the 1.3 liter DDiS Diesel engine, which are widely used under the hood of Maruti Suzuki cars in India.

Maruti Suzuki will display the Ignis at the 2016 Auto Expo and will put it on-sale by mid-2016.
