Mahindra XUV500 W4 – FrontView
Ever since the launch of the XUV500, the flagship SUV offering from India’s home grown sports utility vehicle major Mahindra & Mahindra there was a rumor of company launching a new base variant dubbed as Mahindra XUV500 W4 variant. Now the W4 variant launch comes as a full-surprise, as the dealers too were unaware. The ex-showroom, Delhi price of this formidable SUV is Rs. 10.95 lakh which may vary in different cities.
At this price you get a full-sized 7-seater SUV comfortable for large families, instead opting for 5-seater Nissan Terrano, Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport. Furthermore, the XUV500 W4 variant will directly compete with the likes of Tata Aria, Tata Safari Strome and its own sibling Mahindra Scorpio. These cars haven’t exactly monopolized the market but a version of the car that is more affordable to the company’s target customer may lead to many more people choosing to make the shift.
This move by Mahindra comes when the sales of XUV500 has dropped from 4,000 units/month to just 2,000 units/month. The slower selling XUV500 seems to have given the Mahindra Scorpio another wind in its sails as the latter’s monthly sales figures for the past 3 months had bettered that of the XUV500 and the Renault Duster. The launch of the cut-price XUV500 variant could reverse this trend by making more Scorpio buyers shift to the XUV.
From the outside, the XUV500 W4 variant is similar to its elder siblings, W6 and W8 in terms of design. But omits fog lamps, static bending projector headlamps, body cladding, black strip on the B & C pillars, and comes with ‘W4’ badge on the fender. However, it will retain the projector headlamps with LED parking lights, Follow-me-Home lamps and Lead-me-to-Vehicle lamps, twin exhausts, roof rails, tubeless tires with full wheel caps, power ORVMs, rear windshield with wiper, washer and defogger and tinted solar-reflecting glass on its exterior features.

The cost-cutting affect on the inside is evident. With the omission of few features like leather upholstery, 6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with DVD player, cruise control, tyre-tronics, intellipark, rain-sensing wipers, intelligent light-sensing headlamps, hill hold & hill descent control, telescopic steering, side & curtain airbags, power-foldable ORVMs, steering mounted audio control, automatic climate control, ESP (Electronic Stability Program), alloy wheels, glass embedded antenna, conversation mirror, puddle lamps, entry assist lamp, door ajar lamps, camping lamp, reading lamps for 2nd and 3rd row seats and power windows with driver side express down.
But instead of the touchscreen, the XUV500 W4 variant gets a basic integrated music system with CD/MP3 and 4 speakers. Other features include, micro hybrid system, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, side impact beams, crash protection with crumple zones, all-4-wheels disc brakes (even missing-out in Toyota Fortuner), electrically adjustable side rear view mirrors, tilt-adjustable power steering, remote central locking, 6-way adjustable driver seats, chrome scuff plate for 1st and 2nd row, center armrest with cup holders in 2nd row, remote tailgate opening, flip key with remote central locking, 1st row reading lamps, electrically operated remote fuel lid opener, glove box with laptop holder, an umbrella holder and fully foldable 2nd & 3rd row seats.
Mahindra XUV500 W4 – RearView
Like other two variants Mahindra XUV500 W4 variant is powered by a the same 2179cc, 4-cylinders, 16-valves, 5th Generation VGT, mHawk140, Direct Injection diesel engine with a maximum power of 140 bhp at 3750 rpm and a maximum torque of 330 Nm at 1600-2800 rpm. The engine drives the front wheels of the crossover and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. It sprints from 0-100kmph mark in 12.5 seconds with a top speed of 175 kmph. Despite the powerful engine, the XUV500 W4 offers an impressive fuel economy of 15 kmpl (ARAI certified). The suspension system too will also be the same, McPherson type with Anti-Roll Bar at front and Multilink type with Anti-Roll Bar at rear.
Mahindra XUV500 W4 is available in 2 shades only which include Moondust Silver and Volcano Black. And the interiors will have no black dual-tone option, instead will feature only light walnut brown dual-tone color option. With the addition of W4 variant, the XUV500 has 4 variants in its line-up, named W4 FWD (New), W6 FWD, W8 FWD and W8 AWD. All the variants comes with a manufacturer warranty of 3 years/1,00,000kms as standard.
