Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicle, a joint venture between Mahindra & Mahindra and Bangalore based Electric Vehicle maker Reva has announced that it will introduce a new electric vehicle in the next 18 months based on a model from parent group Mahindra & Mahindra’s existing portfolio.

Mahindra Reva in collaboration, are currently working on an electric vehicle based on one of the existing car platforms. As per the information, the company is going to reveal the vehicle within 3 to 6 months as the launch is expected in 18 months from now. The company also is planning to introduce electric scooters in the market. Currently the company is testing the technology in some of its vehicles but is reluctant on specifying the same.

Mahindra & Mahindra has been a great player in this market and one of the first to take technological initiatives in favor of the environment. The company recently took over Maini Motors, which is the parent company of REVA and now is planning to launch an existing vehicle featuring an electric powertrain.

“We have technology that is scalable, so we are evaluating all Mahindra platforms (such as Scorpio and Verito) to see what is feasible in terms of consumer acceptance and costs. We’re choosing a few models and it will take 3-6 months to decide product. There has been a thought on electric scooters as well,” Mr Chetan Maini, Chief of technology and strategy, MREV said.

The element of suspense has now been introduced and it remains a mystery as to which vehicle an electric powertrain would come as standard. Whether it would an iteration of the Mahindra Scorpio Hybrid showcased at 2008 Auto Expo or the Mahindra Xylo. We can only make assumptions about the next jolt that Mahindra gives to the market.
