News is that Nissan’s low cost car brand Datsun has now launched its much awaited hatchback Datsun Go in the Indian market. The competition is too high in the entry level hatchback segment. With Datsun Go, the race is now going to turn even more interesting. This Nissan product is already widely being compared to Maruti’s Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon who are also doing good business. They are the two toughest competitors in the hatchback segment.

Here is a comparative look at the Datsun Go, Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon in terms of the price, dimensions, engines and fuel efficiency:

–  Pricing: For the first time buyer, especially for the middle class segment, pricing plays an important role in deciding a car. Entry level hatchback segment is very popular among such buyers as they offer good features and mechanics at a very affordable price. Datsun Go comes with a price tag of Rs. 3.12 – 3.70 lakhs. The pricing of Maruti Alto 800 is around Rs. 2.41 – 3.53 lakhs and the price of Hyundai Eon is nearly Rs. 2.87 – 3.85 lakhs. Out of the three, Alto 800 wins in this arena because for a first time car buyer, a price difference of Rs. 45 -70 thousand can be really big.

–  Dimensions: Datsun Go has been built on the same platform as Nissan Micra. Thus, the car is the most spacious one in its segment and is almost equivalent to most of the B+ segment cars. The Datsun Go has a length of 3,785 mm, width of 1,635 mm and a wheelbase of 2,450 mm. Maruti Alto, the smallest of the three, has a length of 3,395 mm, width of 1,490 mm and a wheelbase of 2,360 mm. Hyundai Eon comes with a length of 3,495 mm, width of 1,550 mm and a wheelbase of 2,380 mm. Thus, in this arena, Datsun Go comes across as the best option.

–  Power and Fuel Efficiency: Datsun Go has been loaded with a 3-cylinder, 1.2 L  engine, same as the one found in Micra but has been tweaked a little to be more fuel efficient. This engine is powerful enough to offer a power output of 67 BHP and torque of  98 Nm. Maruti Alto 800 has been equipped with a 796cc, 3-cylinder engine that is effective enough to produce a power output of 47 BHP and a torque of 69 Nm. Thus, in comparison, Maruti features the least impressive engine while Datsun Go is the most desirable option. However, Alto 800 redeems itself by offering best fuel efficiency. It offers best-in-class mileage of 22.74 kmpl. On the other hand, Datsun Go offers fuel efficiency of 20 kmpl and Hyundai Eon comes with fuel efficiency of 21 kmpl.
