Finally our prayers have been answered. Yamaha India has given its flagship sportsbike, the YZF-R15 a comprehensive make-over, the first ever upgrade since its launch in June 2008. The new version of Yamaha R15 comes with same engine and specifications, but has changed majorly on the built, aesthetics, features and performance. Yamaha has spruced up the looks of the bike with a slightly revised fairing, tail cowl and new LED brake lamps. The tail end also gets a new number-plate holder and a split mudguard for the rear tyre. Yamaha has been receptive of market feedback by equipping the new bike with a thicker 130mm rear tyre that goes a long way in enhancing the bike’s looks. Its impact on fuel economy is something we will verify shortly. A split seat, new silencer design and stylish 5-spoke split alloy wheels are also part of the makeover. The bike will be available in red, blue and black paint options. Mechanical changes to the motorcycle include an updated ECU and modifications to the drivetrain for improved acceleration and top speed. Engine dimensions and specifications, however, remain unchanged. The engine, carried forward from the outgoing model, is a single-cylinder, four-valve, liquid-cooled 149.7cc motor. A more rigid clutch axle shaft has also been adopted to improve clutch feel. The throttle, too, has been worked upon to improve linearity and throttle response. The big change to the R15 is the adoption of an aluminium swingarm – it replaces the rectangular swingarm of the earlier bike. It features a truss structure and promises to enhance the R15’s handling. A larger 220mm rear disc brake should also offer better braking performance. Yamaha has priced the bike at Rs 1.07 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) – that’s an Rs 9500 hike over the former model. The R15 has lost a lot of ground in the performance segment since the launch of the larger and more powerful Honda CBR250R earlier this year. With these changes, the R15 Version 2.0 has the goodies to win back enthusiasts. “The YZF-R15 has been continuously gaining ranks in the hotly contested premium segment since its launch three years ago and we are sure to repeat the same feat for the new version too. Seeing the trend, the market for premium bikes in India offers immense scope as this segment consists of people who are looking for performance characteristics,” Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO & Managing Director, India Yamaha Motor said.
