TVS-BMW lovechild, the G310R breaks cover; Bajaj-KTM should be apprehensive!

It has been known for a while now that, TVS and BMW Motorrad were working in collaboration on a motorcycle for emerging markets, more specifically, markets like India. Well, were glad to say that the wait is over, and TVS-BMW has now officially revealed the motorcycle they intend to put into production soon.

TVS-BMW has named their Lovechild, the G310R, which will be the smallest BMW Motorcycle and the Largest TVS motorcycle in recent times. Going by the information revealed by TVS-BMW, the G310R seems to be directly targeting the KTM Duke 390 and also seems that the TVS-BMW venture is directly targeting the Bajaj-KTM venture. Exactly like the Bajaj-KTM venture, in the TVS BMW venture, BMW Motorrad will be doing the engineering and designing duties and TVS will be producing the motorcycle using machines imported from the BMW Motorrad Headquarters in Germany.

The G310R is no different from a typical BMW Motorrad motorcycle, and the styling of the motorcycle stands witness to that. The design is a mixture of sharp styling and also flowing curvaceous elements. We can see the styling cues being taken from some of the other, larger motorcycles at BMW Motorrad, like the front seems to have been inspired by the front of the R1200R, and the side profile carries design elements from the S1000R.Taut lines added at strategic points on the motorcycle adds a muscular look to it, making it look all the more aggressive.

The TVS-BMW G310R is powered by a liquid cooled, fuel injected, 313cc, single-cylinder, DOHC, 4-valve engine, designed and engineered by BMW Motorrad, with a compression ratio of 10.6:1. The engine is capable of producing a maximum power of 34 BHP @9500 RPM and a maximum torque figure of 28 NM @7500RPM. Drive is sent to the rear wheel through a 6-speed gearbox. Since it was developed by BMW Motorrad, we expect this engine to be made with standards never seen before in the low capacity, high performance motorcycle segment. With a claimed fuel efficiency of 36.05 KMPL and a 11-litre fuel tank (same as the Duke 390), the G310R should be capable of going just below 400 Kilometres on a single tank of fuel.

The G310R uses a Tubular Steel Frame and an aluminum swingarm. The Motorcycle is suspended by a 41mm Upside Down, Inverted Fork at the front and a Gas charged Monoshock at the rear with 131mm of travel. Braking Duties are handled by a 300mm Disc with a fixed 4-piston caliper at the front and a 240mm disc with a 2-piston Floating caliper at the rear. ABS is standard equipment on the G310R, which should make Bajaj-KTM a little more apprehensive and this braking setup should give this motorcycle some serious bite.

The G310R has a wheelbase of 1374mm and the seat height is adjustable between 785mm and 815mm. the motorcycle runs on 110/70-17 and 150/60-17 tires for the front and rear respectively, which is exactly the same as the KTM Duke 390.

With the G310R, the customer will also be able to choose from a few nice accessories like Luggage Boxes, 12 V charging socket, Heated Grips, LED indicators etc. which all, shows us BMW’s Heritage as a touring motorcycle manufacturer.

The G310 has been developed by TVS-BMW with developing countries in mind, and will give BMW access to new markets globally, which will help them in increasing their market share, and this partnership will give TVS access to BMW’s technologies. The Bike was revealed in just two color schemes – a Black and white with BMW Blue styling cues and also a deep metallic blue. The G310R is not just a one-off motorcycle but is a family of motorcycles, and will with time, spawn off a Half Faired sibling and also an Adventure bred sibling.

I do not know about others, but I see close competition between Bajaj-KTM and TVS-BMW.
