The German car manufacturer BMW India, rolled out their 20,000th car, from their only car manufacturing unit in India, located in Chennai. The BMW Plant in Chennai commenced operations on 29th March 2007, was built at an initial investment of $20.9 million (more than Rs 110 crores) and a capacity to roll out 3,000 cars annually on a single shift basis.

Over the years, BMW India has gradually increased the capacity of their plant in Chennai. Earlier this year, BMW India increased the manufacturing capacity of their India plant to 11,000 units annually, in a bid to continue as the top luxury car manufacturer in the country.

Not all BMW cars sold in India are being manufactured at their plant in Chennai. BMW India manufactures, 3 Series sedan, 5 Series sedan, X1 SUV and X3 SUV at their plants in India. While the following BMW cars are sold as CBU in India, 5 Series GT, 3 Series convertible, 5 Series 535i, 6 Series 650i and 640d, 7 Series, X5, X6, X6 M, M3 and Z4.

BMW India dethroned Mercedes Benz India as the top luxury car manufacturer in India in 2009 and has successfully managed to remain at the top in India. This year too, BMW is ahead as the top luxury car manufacturer in India and is going to continue its reign 3rd year in a row.
