2014 Auto Expo – Production VW Taigun planned for 2016; showcar previews future compact SUV

VW has yesterday showcased the Taigun compact crossover concept at the ongoing Auto Expo 2014. The car has been showcased for the first time in India at the event and the same will rival the EcoSport when it launches on Indian roads by 2016. The Taigun in concept guise has a pretty minimalistic design with no over the top eccentric design philosophy. Seems like VW plans on playing a safe game instead of going all guns blazing in the design department.

The car has a pretty simple design on the inside as well which may appeal to many as the fit and finish of the interiors is pretty high quality and the same is expected to be carried over to the production version as well. But what may turn out to be an issue at a later stage is the fact that the car is not very spacious on the inside and neither it is tall enough to rival other SUVs.

The door handles on the rear are integrated in the rear quarter glass, much like what we first saw on the Beat hatchback. You can’t really find it in the first look and can make it out when you look closely. You get flip open windows that we first saw on the Up hatchback. The glass area of the rear of the hatchback will open independently of the rear.

The engine of the concept car was a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol motor which has a maximum power output of 108 BHP. VW is believed to be working on the feasibility of launching the car in India which we think should return positive results because the market for compact crossovers is thriving in India and Volkswagen would surely like to be a part of it.
