Volkswagen, the German auto major unwrapped the topless E-Bugster concept at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show previewed the look of the future Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet, the company said in a statement. The concept is a revised version o what was seen at Detroit. No confirmation yet from VW on whether an electric Beetle convertible is in the works; a gas-powered Beetle convertible is expected to debut in November at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Power for the Volkswagen E-Bugster Speedster Concept comes from a 114-hp electric-motor that allows it to run from 0 to 100 kph in 10.8 seconds. On a full charge of its 28.3 kWh lithium-ion batteries, the E-Bugster Speedster Concept allows for a total driving range of 180 kilometres. With a quick charging function, Volkswagen says that the battery can be fully charged in just 35 minutes.

The drop-top E-Bugster concept is lower than the 2012 Beetle, with a chopped windshield, flared fenders and LEDs lighting up the front fenders. The company is also introducing the idea of a new Combined Charging System that allows the EV to be charged via one interface using any available charging modalities.

“This will be based on a new, uniform industry standard for the connectors of future electric vehicles that will be available to all manufacturers,” V-Dub said in a statement. “And this standardisation goes beyond the plug itself: in the Combined Charging System, the charge controller and the electrical architecture must be able to handle all charging types. This will reduce costs and simplify widespread global implementation of electric mobility.”
